You know I think it depends on your eyes as well, my eyes do not see color like they used to when I was younger. I think the green pan seems to work good for me. Have you gone up  to South Pass and tried your luck on Rock Creek? I have panned there and found color, in fact if I was n Wyoming when the spring run off hits that would be a great place. Right now I have a high banker that I am getting set to try out very soon. It is also an area of black sand and I have already found a nugget there in the last spring run off.

So far I like the green pans the best as well. The black pans visibility is better than metal but not as good as green to me, and the texture of my black pans are harder to get fines out of than the green. So far I haven't tried the blue or red pans.

I too prefer the Green over other colors.

I rub the inside of a new pan with 600 grit sand paper before use.

It helps slow down the fine gold and does away with the glare from the shinny plastic..   Wise

A black gold pan is better to see any gold in he pan, belive me you will see gold in your pan even flour gold, I have a 12" black pan and a  24" green pan, and a sluice its about 4' long.
When out in the field I use my 12" pan to pan the concentrate into the 24" pan, but I have only been finding flour and pinhead gold from last weekend in N, Utah and did not use my sluice, just a lot of digging in 3'x3' hole and i still have not hit bedrock as yet then i should start seeing some better size in color if there is any good luck and if need take your concentrate home.
Well is there any one that likes to pan here in ogden,ut,  here are some photo of the creek
thanks
Walt

Gold can be seen easily in any color pan that is dark enough to provide a background that contrasts with the gold. The black pans do hide the black sand, though, but the gold is quite visible. Black is also good for small gemstone panning.

Frankly, I  think as we get older our eyes change and different color pans work for some that do not work for others. My eyes like the green pan right now, I started out years ago with a metal pan that I heat treated to change its color. Then I went to a black plastic pan about ten years ago and now it is green that works best for me. I guess what I am saying is different pans for different people depending on your eyes.

I think the biggest reason I favor the green pans right now is they seem to have more aggressive riffles. I've seen a few of the blue pans that look interesting but since I have about a dozen pans and only 2 hands I suppose I'll stick with em.    Cheesy
