Gold from pc board is not really worth extracting.the chemicals that are worth more than the gold what you extract.
The with this is worth it, you have to process large volumes of computer scrap.
but that's only my opinion.

I agree with you, strolch. You have to process large volumes of scrap to make any profit. That is why this recycling process is practiced as a way of living in some of the poorest developed countries in the world . Also it is environmentally dangerous practice so several countries won't let individuals do it.

Just my thoughts.

Here is how I see it playing out for the small timer.

Collect bunch of old pc parts.
set up tank in garage
purchase chemicals (takes 2 weeks as can only buy pint sizes 1 per day)
fill tank suddenly remember protective gear, go buy.
Take family to motel while house defumes.
Move operation to garden shed in yard
notice white van across street with guy taking photos
collect parts to dump in tank
answer doorbell
answer sheriff departments questions about chemical purchases and meth labs
recieve citation for unsafe chemical practices
pay fine
ready parts to dump in tank
answer door bell
show epa person operation
pay fine
pay hazardous waste to haul chemicals away
answer doorbell
recieve court summons from neighbor suing over dead trees in back yard
take family to doctor over sudden chronic breathing problems...   Grin Cheesy

You're doing it wrong, Idaho Jones. The greatest amount of gold on a computer board is on the fingers and on the connectors. A chisel bladed X-Acto knife is what you need and a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel. Cut off all connectors usint the wheel, discard the plastic bits. Starting on the board interior side, cut the traces to the board fingers and scrape the gold plated copper from each finger down to the bare board. That collection of metal can be separated in a crucible based on the physics of metal. The copper weill float on the gold. Any residual solder will float on the top of that. Yes, lead alone is heavier but the antimony-lead bond isn't broken by the heat. That's why solder works.

I know you were joking but the chemical way is only for third world countries where life is cheap.

Yeah I was just having fun GD.  Grin Your way is probably safer and cheaper  Wink

I find it's far more fun and easier for me to dig up fresh stuff than scrape connectors. Most of that plating is mighty thin, but I guess if you had access to enough free old parts it might be worth it. Speaking of electroplating I wonder if you could use the old plated parts and re-plate something new?

Items Plated can in deed be Unplated.

Again the Cost is over the Top.

I too would rather spend a few hours in the Wash then Play the Chemical Game but I do keep anything that is plated.

I keep the Fingers as GD says and the Old Ceramic Pentium Processors .

With $10.00 of Chemicals and a day or two of time, I have been able to Recover a few hundred dollars of Gold.

I will not Process anything less then say 30lbs of Materials.

I designed and helped a guy set up a gold recovery business that used only propane gas which burns so clean the only byproduct is water and carbon dioxide. Safe on all counts.

When you smelt the metals, they cool into an ingot with the gold at the bottom, the copper in the middle and the solder on top. Easy to separate by shoking the ingot. No further refinement is necessary to scrap the gold and the cheapest recovery system ever developed. We won awards for his processing plant and grants to build 5 more.
