I wondered if anyone on the board has ever hit a big gold nuggert using a metal detector? If yes, I would love to see some pictures of it. Thanks!

Regards,

Christian

Hey Christian...Big Nuggets are very rear. They seem to be a few places in the world that has more than their share of them. Big Nuggets are ones that have not moved very far from their source. Once they get in a river system they get beat up and ripped apart pretty fast. I have Dredged for an entire season without recovering a nugget over a 1/4 oz and had other seasons with 1/2 oz'ers every where. I can't say for sure but when I compare the hours I spent underwater and the hours I spend out of the water looking for gold I think I find more nuggets out of the water....Art

I spent 8 years out West prospecting for gold nuggets with a metal detector. Unfortunately- I don't have any pictures of them. They are still being found- even in this day and age. All it takes is a little $$$$
for a good detector and a few good locations and you can still find some nice ones. They might not be very big but you just never know what you might run across when out in the desert. It could be anything from a patch of nuggets to a meteorite strewnfield to a semi- precious deposit of lapidary rough to a gold coin cache. You just never know.  Huh? Huh?

Here's a link to a club I belonged to at one time. This area is one of the prime locations in the country for gold nuggets. There are still large nuggets being found in the Rich Hill mining district.

The club opened another successful push this past Sat morning. As of last night- over 40 nuggets were found with the largest being a little over 1/4oz. Many more will be found in the coming days.
