Please don't take this the wrong way but do you know what a highbanker is? Ever seen one in use? They're not exactly small and certainly not a project for a DIY project. They're nearly as complex as a pumper fire truck and use extremely high water pressure pumps.

GoldDigger, I think he's using highbanker generically to refer to any power sluice.

Highbankers are environmentally destructive and are banned in many places. Firing water cannons at a hillside cannot be undone later no matter how hard you try.

If he meant something else, he should correct it right away. The terms we use are specific and what you describe is usually referred to as a suction dredge.

Golddigger,
I'm not going to get into an arguement with you on this.  I know you have a whole heck of a lot more experience prospecting than I do.  For all I know the root problem could be as trivial as a difference of usuage between the US and Australia.  However, I do know that if you google "highbanker" you'll find a lot more examples of the powered sluice where the sluice box is up on the bank well above river level and water is pumped from the river than you will examples of the kind of hydraulic cannons you refer to.  Check it yourself, or just look at these examples:

Highbanking is not the same as power sluicing. I am a life member of the GPAA and own several working claims in the USA. None in Australia where I live part year. The rest of the time, I avail myself of my US citizenship to travel as I please and where I please.

Harold, the term highbanker describes a water cannon. It's not a sluice. Both of you claim to not want to argue yet here you are. Arguing.

If anything, I am using the proper definition based on centuries of mining. Recent changes in language may occur but some of us who have been prospecting for a generation or two use the term as it was intended.

Ray, please don't take this too seriously. This shouldn't be an arguement about terms and definitions. I think what Harold needs and what he came here for is an answer to his initial question. Take it easy guys!

The problem is that highbanking is very, very destructive. Entire mountains have been eroded away by highbanking. This is why I asked initially if Harold knew what a highbanker was. Note that I asked for clarification at first. BA and Harold have taken it as a personal challenge for some reason.

I honestly don't care if he does, in fact, build a highbanker but a sluice is a sluice - powered or not. Highbanker is a cool sounding name adapted by a company as their name. They misapply that name to their products. The terms we use to describe our tools shouldn't be arbitrary. I could call a gold pan a fancy wok but that's playing games with a device that has a proper name. A highbamker is a hydraulic water system for washing down entire hillsides. It has a proper name - highbanker. I'm not some sort of environmentalist opposed to using dredges, which are not destructive, but highbanking exceeds anyone's idea of prospecting.

Now, I respectfully request that the conversation continue without me but one more mention of my not knowing the proper term will result in my rejoining this discussion. Leave me out of it and BA and Harold may continue in peace without me. I'll just continue to do my moderator thing from the corner.
