There are numerous companies among them, Whites, garrett, Fisher and of course Mine Lab that make machines specifically for gold detecting.  How they work I cannot say as I'm not an engineer but people do find gold with them.  I personally don't own one (my bread box has never had enough to afford one) but those that do have their favorite.  I'm sure someone will chime in and give you info on their A#1 gold getter.

take care out there,
Gramps

PI machine with a sample and Response time under 10 uS has a chance.

VLF machines running 15 Khz and more  All Metal with Manual Ground Balance is good.

Specialized Gold machines are the ticket if you have the funds.

If you have the money (VLF):

Fisher Gold Bug II
White GMT
Tesoro Lobo ST

If you want a good older machine:

Whites GoldMaster (II, Vsat, III)
Tesoro Lobo
Fisher Gold Bug

If you are more specific, we can help you more, but all metal detectors have adjustable sens.

Are you looking for frequencies?

Cheers

Sean

I got my 1976 Coinmaster 1TRDX working again and was going to search for my wife's missing gold necklace.  The 1TRDX was a pretty basic model in its day and there has been a lot of advances in electronics since them.  I am not sure if my machine has a chance of detecting the gold chain or not. From the information in the responses, it appears to require a more specialized or sophisticated machine than mine.

Thanks

Metalmania

Give it a GO!   It can't hurt any.    Check out any whisper you hear.   Chains are hard to find with any machine.  The eddy currents from individual links seem to cancels each other out.   If there wadded up in a bunch not so bad.
