Go Up Go Down

Does anyone know of any streams or other spots south of Gatesville that may have gold? I live 30 miles WNW of Louisville, Ky. so the popular spots can be a long drive on my limited free time. I have plenty of hand fed gear, but nowhere close to go. So far I've narrowed it down to 14 Mile Creek, Silver Creek, and possibly the stretches of Indian Creek that flow into Harrison Co., but access is a problem. I've heard of past findings in Bridgeport, but cannot locate a creek, so I presume that it no longer exists. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply Homefire. All of the listings on there are north of Gatesville with few exceptions. I'm located just 10 miles north of Corydon, In., and about 25 miles from the Ohio River. The Pleistocene glaciers that deposited gold in my state got down to slightly past the river into northern Kentucky, so I know that there has to be some down here, it's just a question of where. The terrain here is hilly as a result, in fact this region is called "The Knobs", and is right on the ragged edge of where the glaciers eventually halted. As they melted they left rubble, including gold, in their wake. The Bridgeport discovery I mentioned is listed in the GPAA book, but was apparently a long time ago, though no actual date is given. There are no local legends of strikes, and the topography has changed a bit in the last 10,000 years, so any gold bearing streams could have changed or disappeared in the interim. One occasionally finds drop stones and other clues, so there just about has to be some gold as well. One promising stream, Blue River, is off limts as it's protected as a "wild and scenic" waterway. Too bad, because there's a dam at Milltown that almost surely has a gold bench at it's upstream side. It flows through at least two counties that have recorded gold discoveries, what I wouldn't gve to spend a month there with a dredge!

Have you tried using google earth to look for the ancient rivers in the area. You can get a good idea if a stream went through there and can pull up the elevations which will also give you an idea of where the steam was and help you find access points.

Hadn't thought of that, in fact I didn't know it had that feature. I'll look into it, thanks!  Smiley
