I got an ad in my mail today for microfiber carpets and it got me thinking...microfibers can pick up the tiniest bits of dust, so why not use it in a sluice (instead of the usual miner's moss) to pick up more micro gold? The pile of the carpet in the ad appears to be about 1cm thick. No idea how it'll stand or flatten in flowing water. Anyone tried it before?

I'm thinking it would load up too fast but give it a shot. Cool

Prospectors here in AZ have been using carpet, usually indoor type, for sluices for many years with good success. After a slucing session lift out the carpet and wash the particles caught in the carpet. Works GREAT !

Two things come to minde here, Hobbyist. A sluice requires bumpy material at the botton, not smooth material like Microfiber. Then, with the particle grabbing characteristics of that material, it would be a real job to get the cloth to release fine gold.

I'd say stick with traditional materials for real world prospecting but do take a piece of Microfiber along to try it on your next outing.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Homie's prospector instincts are right again. Did a few test runs with the microfiber polishing cloths i have at hand, and they all load up very very fast with the finest of soil/black sand particles. GD's right too...while soil particles swish out easily from the cloth in soapy water, black sand tends to snag a lot. I'll say it's not practical, and old-fashioned miner's moss (or a rougher less-snaggy indoor carpet) is still the better way.
