Go Up Go Down

We have 100 acres of tree farm that has been in our family for almost 200 years.  Running through the middle of the property is an underground spring that bubbles up through the rocks and has created a small but beautiful waterfall.  We haven't done much investigating of the area but from what we have done, we have found lots of quartz rocks ranging from palm sized to boulder size.  Of the quartz that we pulled out of the brook, they were all a beautiful shade of orange from the iron in the soil.  I have read that this is a good sign that there might be some gold or silver in the area.  Does anyone have any experience in prospecting and what some good signs are to look for?

Hi there wizzie there is a good chance that gold may be present, if there is a hill near by you could try further up the slope
the smaller pieces of gold will get washed down the hill due to the rain washing it down the slope and another area to look
for is where the quartz breaks through the surface of the ground other than that you should talk to homefire or bittburghaggie

Thanks Auminesweeper.  This brook is at the base of a ridge.  There is a lot of slate in this area as well as small outcroppings of bedrock.  Our only problem is that there are a lot of trees which means lots of roots to dig through.  I guess I know what we will be doing come spring.

Wash up a few of those Quartz chunks and send us a photo.

Funny thing, you say you have slate too.

Gold has been found in both, Quartz and Slate formations.

Like stated earlier,  Find a outcrop of quartz and pan some dirt from the nearest dry, wet or sometime creek bed.

Ya never know until you look.

I will try to post pics tomorrow.  The area I am talking about is on the edge of a slate belt that is virtually unexplored for mineralization.  I have done extensive research but have found nothing.  From what little we have explored I am very hopeful.

Pan some samples from the creek. Get as near to bedrock as possible.

Cheers

Sean
