Go Up Go Down

Like I have stated before I am fairly new to this. I have found a spot down here on the Snake River that is producing some nice color. my problem is that I am not the best at seperating the black sand as you can see below. What is the easiest way to seperate the gold and black sand? i have three different pans and a jobe sluice, other than that i can not afford to buy more equipment right now. can anyone help? i would rather not try mercury if that suggestion is mad. Thanks

The pictures above should not be to difficult to seperarte but my sniffer tube is full of black sand and tons of smaller flakes and flour gold. That is the one I need most help on.

I'm not that great at separating either, but one suggestion would be tweezers so you can pick the color out of the sand.  Another idea is a sniffer  bottle to pick up the gold.  It is a small plastic squeeze bottle with a pointed cone top that you can use to suck up the gold into it.  Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.  Good Luck Sarge!  Wise

Didn't read your post close enough, I see you already know about the sniffer bottle!

I start by using a magnet to remove any of the Magnetic stuff.

Do this over a pan in case you mess up!  LOL

I forgot that I have a magnet!! Idiot But there is still a lot of very fine gold. I would like to get as much out as possible and am afraid it will get taken up with the magnet.

Personally, I'd save the black sands you removed with the magnet until you have a couple of good sized pans and then start the process all over again.

Hi SgtBenson. Like you, I'm relatively new to this and prefer not to use mercury (and strong acids). My collection of black sand is increasing very fast as I've uncovered approx 200 foot of riverbank that's just loaded with the stuff till bedrock. Maybe you'll find the following suggestions helpful.

On panning: get some flexible adhesive magnetic sheeting (60mil magnetic power works for me) and stick it to the outside of your pan, (opposite the side of the pan's inside which has the riffles) and slather silicone waterproofing over it. The black sands will be attracted to it and can be easily scraped away. 3 to 4 square inches of the magnetic sheeting should be sufficient (i use a 16" pan). Don't forget to add some detergent to break the surface tension of the water and minimize loss of floating Au particles.

Soak the black sands in vinegar for a few days (or run it thru a tumbler with vinegar for a day if you have one). This'll remove the gangue on any 'hidden' flakes of gold. Wash the black sand several times then roast in an iron pan  after mixing with equal parts of non-iodized salt in a well ventilated place. When dry, pour the hot black sand into a tub of cold water. This will fracture the gold from the iron. You can then do more panning or snuffer-bottle out more color.
