Oh, so blame me for finding all those small treasures now, eh?

Heh. Glad it's working for you, mate! So many of us do that these days. It's a wonder the manufacturers don't just take the knobs off.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

:)Hey Golddigger took your advise and tried the steel shot  boy did i have a ball it works great! then i went further and buried a small key like you use to open a bathroom door when it gets locked from the inside  I put it down about 6 inches and with the detecter about 2 inches above the ground i could hear it. I was amazed at what this cheap little BH could do !!  so im off to the desert to see what happens, wish me luck, Ill need it!

I'd use lead instead of steel...

And it realy depends on how hot the ground is (mineralization). Where I live I have used a GMT and the average mineralization for the washes here is around 75-80, which means you have to turn down the sensitivity or get alot of overloads.

With less sensitivity you get less depth, so stick to exposed bedrock with a VLF.

I do alot better just panning, plus you get the gold that detectors overlook, alot of gold.  Great

 Detecting Hi sue

took the BH out and played in the field next door for a time with some steel shot and a little key , I could hear the key (small suitcase key)when I buried it about 6 inches and I was about 2 inches above the groung so needless to say i was amazed so when I get the chance to go out, we will see what we shall see , thanks sue

Hey! That is goldigger, small g, one d!  Funny

The other GoldDigger1950, is hanging upside down, down there in Oz. Besides, if you do not use the correct spelling you will confuse the server.... up to a point.

Yes, I said lead shot, because lead is non-ferrous, so will not give a ferrous/iron reaction with the detector, I am going to have to try my own advice.... I gave it because I have heard of it. The lead reaction will be LIKE gold but not identical.

Your problem is you are so all-fired anxious, to get out there, you are not paying attention to detail. Sometimes detail can be life saving! But I don't blame you, I would probably do the same.  Detecting

There is a lot of good advice, on this forum, today and I will add to it: take something like a cat-litter pail or dog-food pail and a trowel, with you. When you get a response to your search, scoop into the pail, until you do not get any more response.... do NOT worry about looking for the nugget, in what you scooped, when the pail gets too heavy, to lug along, quit and take it all home..... pan it out, very carefully, because you CAN have more than nuggets!

A cat-litter pail is usually only 10 or 12 liters, size... about 3 US galoons, and much smaller but super-heavy when full.

I had  a lapse, last I spake, someone reminded me, there is always more than nuggets, and, oh yes, no discriminate.

Regarding the no discriminate suggestion, Goldigger, it pays to find those mineralized black sands. That's where the small gold is lurking.

I don't hang upside down, mate. I have Velcro(tm) on my shoes and so do the kangaroos!

There is a 4" gold nugget coil made for the Bounty Hunter machines, and this WILL help you find smaller gold nuggets...Also I might suggest this forum that is BH specific...
