A magnifying tube??  Sounds interesting.  Hopefully someone here knows something about how to make one.  I'd be interested in seeing one myself.

Maybe a "viewing tube" is what you're referring to?  Simple a length of PVC pipe with a plexiglass cap attached to one end with silicone. Held in the water, it will allow you to see the bottom very well. There is a bit of magnification associated with it through water but not much. I suppose a magnifying lense out of a large magnifying glass could be used in place of the plexiglass.

If you are a wood worker or know your way around wood and tools it would be easy to make one. Consider the bottom of a boat that has a glass bottom and you can see everything. Well make a box about 8 inches high by 7 inches wide and using your table saw cut a notch about 1/2 inch from the bottom all around till you can fit the glass/plexiglass into it.. You may have to make 2 or more passes depending on the thickness of the glass/Plexiglass (plastic). Put your viewing choice of material in the groves and Glue, (screws are bestscrew/nail the box together then seal it around the glass and the sides of the wood with caulk.

This should last a season if you don't scratch it up to bad or break the glass while using it.

Just a suggestion.

Good luck and may your face mask never leak, your wet suit never tears and the bottom of your pan always show gold.
