Azjake,
I have a Ludlum model 3 geiger counter set up to work with a couple of scintillation probes - one probe detects a piece of Urananite I have at about 3 feet.  I am planning on putting together a new probe, much bigger and more sensitive that should work for 'drive by' searches.

Seldom,
Yeah, I have been at that site before.  Another good one is minedat.org - has a lot of good information on mines and minerals.  We are planning a trip to Colorado this summer and was looking for someone out there with some hands on prospecting tips for CO.
By the way, love your picture!!!!!!!!

Sell them - there are a lot of collectors out there that are willing to buy 'hot rocks'.  Although not radioactive, meteorites also fetch a good price.

Good luck finding someplace that hasn't been claimed even if you do find uranium. Just like gold, the price of uranium has gone up and just about every uranium bearing area is under claim by the big mining companies or private individuals for speculation.

Ahh, Steve, but it's the hunt for what hasn't been claimed that's so much fun.   Besides, just like unknown species of animal life popping up, someone occasionally stumbles upon a unclaimed mineral deposit.   (Besides, unless it has been patented, claims are occasionally allowed to lapse either deliberately or accidentally)

Bittburg,
Yeah - that's my stance - not all gold, uranium, or minerals, for that matter, have to be on a "forbidden site", much can be found "off-site", if you have sensitive enoughe detectors.  It's the lookin' thats fun.
