From what I have found out there are 2 ways to buy a placer claim.[1] Go thur the BLM,pay all the fees, then it is yours.[2] Several businesses on the internet can sell them to me as well.

Thur the BLM it will cost around 500.00
Thur a business online it will cost between 2000.00 to 10,000.00

Am wanting to know what would be the best direction to go with?

Also wanting to know if it is possible to earn a meek living collecting gold? Crazy

The Maintenance fee is once a year.

Your adding something there!

Yes you can!

It depends on a pile of factors.

Is the Claim Payable.

How are you going to work it?

What is your over head?

Just like any other business, Will it Pay?

On a large scale people can make money with .001 grams of gold a yard.

Working on a Shoe String and on your own, your not going to be able to do that.

Keep in mind that whether you get the claim through a business online or through the BLM, unless it is a patented claim, you're still going to have to pay the BLM the $140 maintenance fee every year (at least after the first year, because the first year maintenance fee dang sure better be included in that fee you're paying the company).  And remember, unless it is a patented claim, you don't OWN the land.   You're just leasing the mineral rights from the government.

I wouldn't recommend buying a claim I hadn't seen.

I'm confused!

What are you going to do, Own and Run by Proxy?

You don't know what the claim will produce until you PROSPECT and PROVE it UP!  (Determine the Reserves or Potential).

I pan in spots that are fun but in no way would it pay for it's self never mind Gas, Travel or Equipment.

When I find one that can, I will Claim.   Yes there out there.

The cost I posted are the Bear Bones cost.

If your going to get a  Back Hoe  in there you need to file a Plan of Operation, Post a Reclamation's Bond,   Funny

and that's before you get the OK from the water people (EPA).

This is NOT a casual, Lets Make Some Easy Money Thing.

I let the Big Boys play that game and I'm more then happy to get the crumbs!

amen......working a gold claim ain't no get rich quick and easy proposition.   As a recreational endeavor, it's a lot of fun and a great diversion from the "real" world.   Making a living at it is a whole other ball game.   Even when the California gold fields were nearly virgin, many more people failed at panning and mining than made a decent living at it.
