and tells me that I should have, from the back of the Keene sluice, to where the riffles begin, rubber V-mat.  Now, I was always told that the upstream edge of the sluice should be left bare...opinions, information, and after reading alot of posts here, proof?

It depends on what you are wanting to accomplish. If you are using your sluice to actually separate nuggets, a V mat is good anywhere so it can catch the heavy bits. If you are looking for concentrates to pan later, it wouldn't do much except stop some of your concentrates in the V grooves.

You decide based on the makeup of what you are moving through the sluice and why.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I run the Mat all the way to the Front of mine.

volume, for me it depends on the flow of water, but almost always i have either a rubber ribbed mat or a indoor/outdoor ribbed short fibre carpet 1/8"-1/4" nap, when i"m not using a mat is when i"m washing into screened container for concentrating.the gold is fine and theres alot of flower(float)gold i would never see without a mat...gimp

I have to say; I always have my black mat at the upstream end of my boxes... however, this gave me a great idea. The upstream side just is a quick way to spot gold so you can determine whether or not you are on the right track. The riffles are the actual workhorses, so it doesn't matter where the black mat resides. The idea behind having black mat on the down stream side is similar to that of having it on the upstream side, except now you are looking for gold leaving your box. Really, it doesn't matter where it is at... but having it on the down stream side could make your equipment run more efficiently by making you recognize where you may need some adjustments; feed speed, angle, flow, and such. This stuff may sound outlandish when first presented, however give it some thought on why and post it here. We could all benefit from little tricks like this added to our arsenal.

Cheers

Sean

I have mine set up with a 6" strip at the bottom end AND 8" at the top. That way I can see if I'm on the gold and see if any is getting past the riffles and carpet. God knows I don't want to see any that far down No no!. This also gives me a tool for adjustment as material can change form test hole to test hole. Makes adjustment quicker for me Great. Just MY way.

Excellent info and thanks to all. I shall be making my own sluice soon. Lost about 10kg of excess weight in 2 months of part-time prospecting; am trim now with firmer pecs. Best hobby in the world! Smiley
