Gramps, I don't know about where you are but I prospected around Taos New Mexico when I was younger I'm 69 now, and there are such a thing as an intrusive dike. (not dyke). Some USGS geology maps show these and that is where I looked. Some were a quarter of a mile wide but many were just a few inches at the surface and were unmapped. In the Taos area some of these dikes contain gold bearing quartz most don't.  Anytime I found a vein of quartz on a hillside I looked it over pretty good and panned the gravel below it. good luck.

gambol1,

Many thanks for that very interesting info, I'll go back through that report and see if there a mention of "intrusive dikes."

Dike and dyke are both accepted spellings. Back in the day I was taught that a "dyke" was a wall meant to keep out water. Somehow it evolved to become a reference to a sexual preference. And now I find out it's also part a geological term!

Hobbist, One of my geology teachers was English. He spelled it dyke though the US printed textbook spelled it dike. A later teacher educated in the US counted off 2 points if you spelled it dyke. I'm aware of the two spellings. I was just trying to be funny. Words have a way of taking on new meanings. Look at the word "gay"  gambol

Hi Gambol. 2 points off? Ouch. I hope that teacher didn't penalize kids named van Dyke each time he took attendance! Grin
I stopped by a few spots on the way home yesterday to look for intrusive dykes, none so far..but I'll keep looking. I find that the best way for geological stuff to stick in me head is to go and identify them in the field.

Ah yeah Gramps, agreed! What would we do without women eh?

Hobbyist, stopping on the way home from work to look at the rocks, metal detect, hunt for gems, fossils or arrowheads is a good way to unwind after a days work. In Texas my trip home crossed several creeks and road cuts and I stopped at every one. gambol
