Gold in nature is normally dull yellow, not glittery. The gray might be silver but it is hard to tell just from a description and the photos. Do you have an assay lab near where you live? It would be the best course of action to have it tested.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Gray could be Galena.  Spit on it and rub with aluminum foil.  Does it smell like sulpher?

The grey silver flaky mineral could be mica, mica is found in many different type of rocks.

Yes I think Xavier is correct. Looks like mica, pyrite on some type of sandstone. Gold is a metal and does not form crystals. However their is some gold that is so called crystalized, but under microscope looks more dendritic. With all the quartz around as you stated, it means that you are in an area that has high mineralization. Check any nearby streams for placer gold and then follow upstream to where it stops. The gold will be in the hillsides on either side. Look for mineralized outcrops and greenstone or rusty colored gossans or dark black in color.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.
