New to the site and just getting my feet wet.  Thought I would post a picture of my find of a life time.  It's a Royal Artillery officer's cross belt plate, circa 1790.  It was found this past spring.  My wife drew the line drawing to show what it looked like when it was new.  It's bent but is such a rarity that the bend doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks for more info on that plate and appreciate your wife's drawing - I saw it over in the intro post section and was curious about it. 1790 - that's sure getting back there in years. The bend wouldn't bother me at all and you did a great job recovering it. What an excellent find. Sue

That's a nice find How did you know what it was ?

I found this several years ago and have no idea what it is, thought it might have come off of a old bike.

A darn nice find...CONGRATS!!!!!!!!   You're wife did fine job of drawing it....I'm a dang good drawer myself and used to draw finds in a logbook I had and still do have somewhere around here-LOL!!!!!!
Never try to bend an item like this back to its original shape...it could hurt it more and it'll lose some value. Keep it like it is and it'll be okay and preserve its value. I've done cold-bends on metal objects and it always leaves a tell-tale sign that it was tampered with. It's best to leave it as you found it except a very light cleaning off of mud or dirt when you first find it. Never try to polish or do any sort of cleaning that will destroy the patination an item has when it is recovered. It will lose value if you do so. Teach Wise
