This old key was found in the same general area as the excellent medieval sword.  In fact, I will be posting a number of items from the same place.  We stumbled on this spot by accident and it yielded relics from Celtic times through medieval.  I first cleaned the rust with a wire brush.  Then I painted it black with water color paint and waxed it in hot boiling wax.  This method is used by a German professional detectorist who finds and sell relics.

Very nice! It must be awesome to hunt an area that dates back that far.

Thanks for the comments.  My nephew was in charge of the 3rd. Armored Division museum in Frankfurt, Germany for many years.  Then he went to the 1st. Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany for a long time.  We had a base of operations, so to speak, to launch out into the countryside to hunt.  We mostly hunted old battlefields as that was the main interest of our host.  Several years ago the exchange rate was much better between the dollar and the German Mark.  Now the Euro is the currency.  We met a number of treasure hunters in Germany.
The thing about Germany is that you can find anything, at any time, anywhere.  It is harder now with the many more hunters.  Still, there is a tremendous amount to be found.  Who know how much actual treasure is to be found because of people caching things through the many wars through the ages.
I am anxious to go back.

What a neat find. It's amazing what you can still find out there.
