Go Up Go Down

i really need help finding the history of this thing.  it was found a hundred meters off the coast of Okinawa japan, and i had to free dive quite aways to get the darn thing.  so why would it be out there? is it American?  is it Japanese?  it has 14 holes for the horseshoe nails to be put into the bottom om the hoof.  is that irregular? would the number of holes suggest the country it came from?  any info would really help.  thanks all

I found some similar horseshoes (with 7 holes per side) when I did a google image search

Apple Bonded Fronts
Apple Bonded

Apple Bonded Fronts Sizes 4-8 (pair). The Japanese manufactured European shape plate with a high quality Synthetic rim pad bonded on for shock absorption. In front pattern only.

I would imagine Japanese used horsehoes too at one time.

Your best bet would probably be electroloysis---you can find lots of information on it here in the forum (look under Cleaning, Preservation & Storage), but here are a couple of urls:

Awesome thank you very much.  my curiosity in its origin stems mainly from what else is out there.  we found some old treads from tanks or amphibious assault vehicles and some bullets while snorkeling and free diving out there.  To this very day the Marine Corps i believe, is the only branch to utilize pack mules for hauling and carrying munitions and supplies.  I was sent to Bridgeport, California for a month of rope suspension technicians training making one rope bridges and crossing gorges, doing cliff rescues, rock climbing in full gear at night, and doing cliff assaults.  it was an awesome course, and my buddy went to another one specifically for the use of pack mules.

The Marines fought for the Island of Okinawa in World War Two, and the only way was by sea and amphibious assault.  however i have never heard of pack mules being brought ashore there by the Marines...I am going to find out the history of this thing as much as possible, or at least where it stems from, you all are helping me out tremendously, thank you

I read a lot of the books published as collections of Ernie Pyle's war correspondence when I was growing up.  I remember that in one of them he talked about the army using mules in North Africa.   You might find this url interesting since it covers the use of mules and horses not only by the US but by the other combatants

My wife's uncle was telling me a story a while back.......when he was a young imperial soldier (home guard) they were paid the equivilent of 5 cents to shoe a horse. They did this for days on end. I still think it probably found its way to where it was found by use of a fishing weight of some sort but we will never know. Oh, the mystery!
