The Brunswick rifle, adopted in 1837 by the British military, used a belted ball.

Johnnn, I think the folks saying Brunswick rifle are onto something.    Take a look at the drawing on the "girdled" bullet and how it would fit in the twin spirals

Wow!  Always nice to learn something new!  I'd have thought that
a belted ball like that would jam more easily, but considering I didn't
even know such a design existed...

Very cool... Smiley  Johnnn, do your musket balls measure out to about the
right calibre for the Brunswick?

Hope everyone had a great holiday, and has a great start to 2011!

Cheers-

Chris

Belted Balls.  If they are 70 cal, they are probably from a Brunswick .

Yes, not very common. I bet I have found musket balls in 200 different places and only one gave up belted balls.

That's definitely what they are.  Belted balls from the Brunswick rifle or one other gun which I can't recall the name of.  If they were as valuable as they are rare to dig I would definitely go back to the shoreline I found mine.
