I recently found this nice .925 ring 4 inches down by a big tree in an old park (well all Chicago parks are kind of old anyways). I wonder if it is vintage or simply modern but lost a few years ago. Is there anyway we could find out if jewelry found is old?

The only way I would think of would be construction and the Makers Mark if it had one.

Most newer stuff is recessed in the back using less metal.

Huh??

Jewelry is hard to date with out hallmarks which makes it easy to reproduce. That rose bud ring you are showing has been around since at least 1908 when Sears had it in their catalog, but that same design is still being made in Mexico and China. The only way to date old jewelry without marks is by the cut of the stones.

Older silver jewelry used to be marked Sterling rather than .925 but that's not an absolute. A hallmark is an easy way to tell but since you don't mention one, that's not going to help. It does look like an antique style ring though. It could be a duplicate of one or a genuine antique. There's really no way to tell.

It's all about that magical moment of discovery when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

No it does not have a makers mark. Thanks

Well at least I know that it has a chance of being old. Thanks for the info.

No hallmark and reads .925. Thanks GD. So according to Seldom it could be original or a replica from a design depicted in a Sears cat back in 1908. At least the style looks vintage.  Wink
