On the subject of discrimination, I would suggest that for the best chance of finding the "keepers" you need to have the discrim set to the absolute minimium that you can get away with, i.e. no discrim.
I use a Minelab GT and it automaticaly knocks out iron. Everything else is detected. I use the meter to see what number the taget is, but at the end of the day, I dig it all. Listen to what your detector tells you, your ears are a really wonderful piece of kit!
I also use the XP GoldMaxx Power (not available in The States I believe), and this machine is an all metal machine, with different tones for different tagets, -- thousands of tones, -- you have to get to know your detector and you can only do this by going out with it, listen to what it says, dig it, and remember what you dig. Eventually you will get to know what lies in the ground before you dig it.
If the signal sounds bad then the target is most likely (but not always), also bad. Good targets nearly always give good audio.
