Vegemite, you have no idea how glad I am that it is finally getting warm enough for you to start hunting again in Australia.   It means that it's also finally starting to get cool enough that those of us who live in the extreme southwestern United States can also get out and start detecting again.  Temperatures above 105 F or 40.5 C definitely do not make for enjoyable or long hunts.

Trust me, I understand (and it does get hotter than that here. I just wanted to use numbers the folks in more temperate climbs could appreciate).   Today it only got up to about 36deg C.   Field hunting time is definitely back.   Hope you find lots of great finds during your warmer months.

The wildflowers are out from the rains and the bush is glorious in colors much more vibrant than the American southwest deserts. It's time for the snakes, spiders and big lizards to emerge from their cool hiding places and join us treasure hunters in the warmth of springtime.

The beach is starting to "un-erode" and the water is warming. I still dive and snorkel with a wetsuit even in summer and hope to God that those great white sharks don't mistake me for a snack. In the early spring, they sometimes catch a cold and you can hear them coughing. It gives away their position every time.

"The wildflowers are out from the rains and the bush is glorious in colors much more vibrant than the American southwest deserts."

It must truly be a sight to behold, since there are few things in this world that compare to the transformation the American southwest deserts undergo after a decent season of rain.   I'll have to put it on my bucket list.

BA, there are bright blues, oranges and yellows all around me in the mornings. Every day I see a new crop of local wildflowers in the bush as I take the dog for his run. We see grass trees, slipper orchids, kangaroo paw and all kinds of wildflowers. I do take the odd photo or two and might just take some time to post them in another thread.

Go Up Go Down

In Perth, I like Scarborough Beach, Burns Beach and Mullaloo Beach. All three have concession stands nearby and lots of coins go astray. People are very careful here about their jewelry and water wading & snorkeling is the only sure way to come up with some. Here in Western Australia, the law requires that we turn in found jewelry items (rule of thumb says if any item's value is over $10.00, it goes to the police first). If it's unclaimed after 6 months, you get to keep it. I always turn them in but know a few guys who don't bother. I do try to find an owner for lost valuables, though.

I found a set of Mercedes Benz keys with the big immobilizer on it. The key ring had so many other keys on it that I have no idea how the owner lost them. The key had a serial number on it so I called a local dealer to see if they could help me find the owner. Coincidentally, he had the owner there who was ordering a new key after having to go home and get his wife's spare keys. Well, he was overjoyed that they'd been found and he came straight to the beach to collect them. We had coffee at Peter's By The Sea in Scarborough and he told me all the extra keys were for his businesses. To replace them all after changing the locks would have cost him thousands of dollars. The Mercedes key alone cost over $400.00 to replace because it has a programmable remote for up to 4 items. He had his security system on one button, his garage door on another and the front gate to his community on the other. Needless to say, he was over the moon about it being found and he insisted I take a reward for finding them and returning them. I did. He was very, very generous.
