A 500 year old Portuguese sailing vessel was discovered in Namibia during April 2008.The Bom Jesus was found on a beach in a temporarily reclaimed mining area near Oranjemund.
Something caught geologist Bob Burell eye. It was a couple of copper castings. He also found two other items which was later identified as cannon. a Couple of days later another employee of De Beers Mining Co. found two black corroded coins. More silver coins were found as well as a single gold coin. Further excavations revealed more gold coins, all in excellent condition. a Rare astrolabe propably the oldest of its kind ever found was the most valuable find, worth its value in gold.
A total of 2159 gold coins with an estimated value of R100 million were recovered. Other finds include 2 kilogram silver, 20 ton copper, 6,5 ton tin and 600 kilogram ivory in a deteriorated state.
None of the items were sold. It was resolved to conserve it for future generations.
