Hello Bill,

I had been on vacation in the Schwarzwad on my last birthday. Great area and friendly people. Also they have some very interesting historic sites which would be well worth checking it out but metal detecting laws in this state make it unfortunately near impossible to do any hunting there.

I will keep you posted re. my US trip! Maybe I will have a new GPR by then that I could bring along.

Best wishes,

Christian

How in the world did cannons wind up in the Arizona desert? And if the ground is so hard, why are they buried?

Other than a visit to Seville Archives, to see what cannons were made of, in that period/yrs, or, yrs before the burial..
And! Even then, who's is to say that the cannons were of recent manufacture..
OR!
If they were much older !
This is another of those, "You'd" have to have been there"   Wink     to know this!

Because you live in an non-desert area
Perhaps you are not aware...
But, it the  "Desert SW", Areas...
The soil is "rock hard" !
This is because ....the Deserts normally receive,  very little in the way of rain!
Things don't sink!
In Az. for example, the average annual rainfall, state wide, is  12" (roughly, 35cm !)!
And!
Then there is this, desert soil condition, called "caliche" that actually, "cements" the soil and anything in it ....
Not! Like it is in Germany....
AND! Yes!
It would be a good idea to know what they were made of...
As a "Mag" will not pick up on anything that is non-ferrous!
But!
I would GUESS!   :Smiley
That!
Since they had no one to hide the cannons from
Who, But! The Indians were living there ?   Huh?
That they didn't bury them very deeply!
But!
A good DS'ing M'Detector & experienced op will pick up on both...As would a GPR Unit!

They dont sink  Chris was asking a question hh >>>>>>>>Well, I would assume that due to the weight the canons may be located a good way down in the ground by now.

It would be importnat to know if you think wheter they are bronce or iron ones.

I will probably be in Arizona next July and could bring either a Lorenz or Pulse Star II with me. Both should be able to detect the canons down to a depth of around 3 meters I'd say.

Christian: Are you originally from Az? I spent quite a bit of time there and had a blast traveling throughout the state.
