Civil War era shipwreck discovered during search for Ike debris (Beaumont Enterprise)

Like a toy surprise in a box of Cracker Jacks - er, slightly water-logged Cracker Jacks, that is - a Civil War era shipwreck turned up among Hurricane Ike debris.

Thought I would give an update on this.

In the new "The Medallion" from the Texas Historical Commission, they have posted some of their findings on this post Ike discovery. It seems that the original speculation was that the ship was a Civil War era blockade runner named the Caroline. There were 3 wrecks identified during the GLO debris removal sonar scans. Two of the wrecks were previously discovered, the Acadia and the Will-O-The-Wisp (both blockade runners). Then there was the 3rd wreck that was found, and they believed that it may be the Caroline. After almost a year of research they are now saying that there may have been a mix up. It now appears that the wreck most recently discovered may be the Will-O-The-Wisp, and the previous Will-O-The-Wisp may actually be the Caroline. Confusing, huh?! Here is a link to the pdf file (the article is about half way down the page).

Brilliant imaging, mate!

For those unfamiliar with Side Scan Sonar, that black line that looks like a street is the blind spot directly below the sonar. That area has to be imaged on the next pass.

This is fascinating stuff. Thanks for posting this.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
