Potosi to claim treasure sunk off Florida in 1622

The Bolivian district of Potosi with the legendary Cerro Rico, the greatest silver deposit in the time of the Spanish conquest announced it was preparing an international demand to recover a sunken treasure which was lost in 1622 but was found three centuries later in 1985 along the coat of Florida, United States. . . . .

The current value of the several tons of precious metals is estimated in three billion US dollars and was recovered in 1985 by the US company Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society Museum.

This is ridiculous..... If somehow they were to win (which they won't)- think of the implications world wide.

"If you've found treasure, you've found trouble" certainly applies. I don't think that anyone/any country who didn't help finance the search has any right to make a claim. I can remember the rickety old wooden ship docked at Key West that they were using as a shop to sell salvaged coins and other items to help finance their endeavor. I think it finally sunk, but it was no secret that they were looking for the Atocha back then. Sue

You're right about this but where does it stop? How about all the people who have purchased pieces of eight or jewelry from the wrecks?
This suit will do nothing but  open a can of worms and it needs to be nipped in the bud.

Isn't there already some law or treaty that would already cover this issue in the first place.?

Just out of curiousity I went to Mel Fishers website and looked up some of the goodies they have for sale. I don't know how they price these rough gemstones but the emeralds are way out of line.

If I was a lawyer for Fishers, I'd sure argue that Bolivia couldn't claim the treasure unless they'd been calling it a part of the country's assets in their government's accounting each and every year since the ship went down. Otherwise, I think it would just be abandoned property.

I would hate to have them ding away at the treasure until all that was left for the finders was a bad experience. Makes it easy to see why things are found and not reported. Sue
