Possible White House loot at centre of shipwreck dispute

HALIFAX (CP) ? A stash of loot possibly stolen from the White House in the early 1800s is at the centre of an international dispute over who owns the bounty that now rests in a watery grave off the Nova Scotia coast.
An American exploration company has laid claim to the bounty on what it suspects is the HMS Fantome, a navy brig that was loaded with goods British and Canadian soldiers made off with after ransacking the White House and Capitol buildings during the War of 1812. . . . . . . . . .

It figures the Brits want it...lol...They sacked the white house and robbed it and they think it all belongs to them...hehehe...I think they should dive it and sack all the bounty and leave the Brits the boat...hehehe...after all the boat was theirs...Smiley

Hi Sue and Toolbox,
I read with humour toolboxs' comments to your post.
I also checked out the news story at canoe, it seems to me, as I am a Brit!
That the soldiers who stole the loot in the first place, were committing an unlawful act.
Therefore the loot belongs to the Yanks....................UNFORTUNATELY!!

Best Wishes, Crowsnest.

Now hang on...We captured Washington during the War of 1812..and took some items back..and yes we set fire to the White House ( it was painted white after the fire..that's why it is now called the White House)

As I remember when the Americans Captured York...now Toronto Ontario, they burned many building, distroyed lots more  and stole lots.
If this ship is in Canadian Waters, and is a British Warship...I think it's ours.
By Ours I mean Canadian.

Dean

Hi Dean,

Thanks for the response to my mail, obviously there are going to be conflicting views as to who has a legal right to the Loot.
Personally, I would use the old adage of finders keepers, no doubt others would disagree.
However I take your point, that during war many items, are appropriated by the conquering army, which brings another old adage, to the victor the spoils!!
Lets hope the original finder or finders who have put money into their search, reap their just rewards.
Best wishes Crowsnest.

I agree that if someone spends the time and money to find these treasures they should get a major part of it...If the items are of historical Value then the Gov that wants them should reemburse the finders. If a ship is in a Counties Territorial Waters then that country has the right to issue permits for salvage...Britian has NO right to get involved in this wreck!!
It's in Canadian  or  Nova Scotia Waters..they have the right to issue the permits.
I think the Nova Scotia should have reps on board to make sure that the recovery is done properly to save historical artifacts...it makes no sense to have then sitting on the bottom where no one can see or enjoy them.

Just my thoughts
Dean

Makes good sense Dean,I think the only time Govs' should get involved is when a recent wreck is listed as a war grave! Obviously the sensitivities of families of any crew lost should be taken into account.
The Nova Scotia wreck is 200years old and as you say apart from items of National Historical interest, which the salvors should be paid for, the rest of the loot should be theirs.

Nice talking to you Crowsnest.

I believe the major part of the treasure should go to the folks who discovered it also Dean...I just had a problem with England claiming the treasure when they stole it to begin with.  Cheesy

The Brits did not steal these items..when they visited the "White House" there was no one home..so they took it into safe keeping!! LOL
