Interesting, Crowsnest. I believe I read that he led the life of a pirate for only a year - he definitely had the knack and the flair. For several years I lived on an island along Carolina coast and had a job where I could watch the sun rise over the ocean each morning - never did see the green flash. Certainly would have started my day off with a bang to have seen pirate ships approaching.

Life along the sea is interesting - here's another story currently in the news where a mystery ship has appeared on the Alabama beach. Sue, who's thinking she'll enjoy being cooped up this winter reading pirate tales. Thanks!

Mystery ship emerges from sand

By Guy Busby Press-Register

FORT MORGAN -- High surf in recent days exposed the remains of a large wooden sailing ship along the beach west of Gulf Shores, to the surprise of some visitors and residents.

Two local historians said the wreck is about three miles from the site where a Civil War blockade runner is buried under the sand, but they did not know the identity of the new ship.. . . . .

Hi Sue and Toolbox,
yes anight with venus and a fortnight of Mercury, was the common cure.
Apparently, many South sea islanders and most isolated island groups, all suffered the curse, when they were discovered by the European Merchant Marine.
Blackbeard, was ambushed at Okrakoke Inlet, after partying ashore on Okrakoke island, you are correct Sue, when you say that Blackbeard had a short reign as a pirate, although in four years he took over 400 ships.
He retired from piracy under a royal pardon and married a daughter of a local, governor and gentleman.
Unfortunately for this lady, she tried once to often to embarrass, Edward.
He retaliated, by turning once again to the sea and his ship, he took his new wife with him  and then promptly passed her around the rest of his crew, as this was the way of anything belonging to the common chest.!! Oh Dear!! smile!

I have also attached a document which you might find of Interest!!

Crowsnest,
Darn tootin' that's interesting. To have compiled such thorough & convincing research that a major paper would invest in an expedition is really impressive. Sue
