I didn't know that. I know a few people here in the states have found some really old silver and gold coins in some of those fields. I figured the Gov lets them take them home.

Love your comments about the Brits, and agree with your comments about the Spanish!

There is a Law of Treasure Trove in England, whereby any article found on land, if it has say, a large percentage of gold then it is considered treasure trove and must be handed over to the Crown or their representative.
Once the value of the object or find has been ascertained, then the finder is rewarded with a percentage of the value, the object or find is usually valued by a committee of experts from the historical, archeaological and antique professions.

I am not sure on the wrecks at sea, however Britain has two areas, one a fishing zone of approx. 12 miles and a territorial zone of 200 miles.
We also have a keeper of wrecks and the rights of ownership, if it is a British vessel.
No doubt our maritime laws of protecting the Archaeology, must be similar to the U.S.

Regards Crowsnest

Would that same law apply if  a person found a single gold coin? That hardly sounds like a treasure trove to me.

Hi Steve,

I think in principle, that all gold artifacts which are found, should be handed in as treasure trove!!..............However, I am sure that many odd coins which are found, never surface in the official market.
I mean if you found a gold coin, you would certainly want to scan the area thoroughly before notifying anyone of the find, I think the Law is generally meant for large hoards and items of Archaeological interest.
It is also common place, to acquire the permission of the Land owner, before you search and agree a split, on anything which you find.

Regards Crowsnest.
