In 1821 a pirate ship was attacked by an American warship in the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel limped into Tampa Bay, sinking. The pirates loaded some nail kegs filled with gold coins onto the longboat and escaped to shore. The couldn't carry everything so they buried some kegs on a small island before escaping into the woods on foot. The pirate ship was loaded with silver bars from a Spanish vessel they attacked in the Gulf.
The ship was called the Maria Teresa and was captained by Miguel Pascal, a local pirate that had his campground on the Manatee River. The Maria Teresa is located somewhere off Two Brothers Island. I did a mag search but could not find anything. This story was told to L. Frank Hudson by the grandson of one of the pirates in 1930. Frank told me to go look for it. The location of the buried gold is just east of the toll booth on the south side of the Skyway Bridge. Anyone want to help me go after it?
