The French and Dutch beat him there too. But he's not remembered for "discovering" Australia. He's remembered for mapping it around the entire coast.

Not that it matters. Only non Australians take issue with things like this.

And although there is no record of it, the Chinese claim to have been there before Cook as well.

In fact, the Aboriginals were there 11,000 years before anyone else. But, who's counting.

Dundee Beach is my back yard , only 10 minutes travel , there are some treacherous reefs close to shore , I have often wondered while out on the reefs fishing if I am sitting over top of an old Portuguese forgotten wreck , it seems unlikely anyone would abandon any Bronze cannons .. cheers Mick

I did come across some evidence of an ancient map surfacing in china. That shows australias east coast. Also not to mention the western coast was already mapped hundreds of years prior to cook and had the name New Holland

It has been proven that the Dutch and French arrived in a dead heat with our boy Cook.

Batavia wrecked of geraldton WA in 1629. Crew made it to shore used a small ship to sail to the indies and get a rescue party for the remaining. If they didnt know where they were how did they find there way back. 150yrs before cook

Max Cramer and Hugh Edwards, both personal friends of mine, discovered the Batavia and both wrote about it extensifely. Max later discovered French and Dutch coins buried atop a local promontory verifying the presence of both countries in the area at the time.
