hawkins traded with the french at fort caroline * near jacksonville, florida on his return trip to england ---giving them a small vessel (the trout) as well as shoes and clothing and food in exchange for the forts cannons --the french that were there were preparing to leave as their supplies had run out and they had not planted food crops or raised livestock like they should have and the local indains seeing the weakness had jacked up the trade prices for food thru the roof and since they were greatly out numbered and weak they could not force the indains to feed them. ---
only ribault's arriving with supplies and men stopped them from leaving --- upon arriving with men and supplies at fort caroline -- ribault made a plan to wipe out the spanish at st augustine via a sea attack against advice from the commander that had lived at fort caroline for the past couple years and knew that hurricanes and strong storms were common during that part of the year -- the rest is history --we know of it because the french commander of fort caroline being very ill at the time was left behind at the fort "in charge" at the time with a handful of sick men -- once the spanish wiped out the shipwrecked french would be attackers they turned on fort caroline -- only a handful of the french escaped --the commander was one of those that did --its via his writings that we know much of what occured then.
drake because of the spanishs dirty dealings --with regard to the hostage swap killings -- hated and distrusted the spanish as a whole as "dishonorible" scum not be given "quarter" (allowed to surrender) for fear of "trickery" (lure you in close with a "fake" surrender than unload on you )-- the spanish like wize hated him to the bone. --his raids cost them plenty
