I got a contract to work on the Atocha back in 1994. We were dredging for emeralds around the ballast pile. Mel told me that the stern section with all the gold was still missing. They are still searching for it today. So far divers have followed a debris trail of gold and silver a distance of 10 miles from the original ballast pile. They will probably still be working on the Atocha 10 years from now.
