Earlier we discussed the Arabia steamer that was found in the KS cornfield. I wasn't aware that one had been found in Iowa, too. Sue

Sunken steamboat artifacts get makeover in Missouri Valley
By The Associated Press | Tuesday, December 26, 2006

MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa ? When the Bertrand steamboat made its way up the Missouri River from St. Louis in 1865, Montana gold mining towns awaited its cargo.
But the vessel didn?t make it. The bottom of the river became its final destination.

In addition to gold, mercury and whiskey, the ship carried hardware for several Montana stores. . . . . .

He said the Bertrand was on its maiden voyage when it sank near what is now the DeSoto Refuge. In the late 1960s, two Omaha treasure hunters, Sam Corbino and Jessie Purcell, wanted to salvage the boat?s cargo, rumored to include 500 casks of mercury, 5,000 gallons of whiskey, and some gold. An agreement with the U.S. government allowed the two to search for and keep 60 percent of those items.

Owens said over 100 tons of artifacts were retrieved from the sunken vessel, including hand tools, foodstuffs, clothing, medicines, munitions, leather goods, ceramics, ivory and iron. Most of those artifacts are located at the refuge. . . . .

I had never heard of this either. Huh? Wow- That's amazing. They've recovered over 100 tons of artifacts already. Sounds like another museum is in the works.
