Oh yes Aussie . The wreck has been found . There were a lot of building bricks on board as ballast . All the money chests were already salvaged exept one . I got a sneeky feeling that I know where that chest ended up  Wink   Cornelius

Hi there... I dived the Batavia last year.. fantastic to still be able to run your hands along a 300 year old canon. Amazing story too. here's a little clip of the wreck site

Two good friends of mine found it originally. Hugh Edwards and Max Cramer. Hugh wrote a book called Island of Angry Ghosts about the crew and wreck of the Batavia. Max Cramer wrote Treasures, Tragedies and Triumphs of the Batavia Coast and The Batavia Legacy. Both of Max' books are about the discovery and recovery of the wreck. The Maritime Museum in Perth has a lot of the recovered items on display as well as a few skeletons recovered.
Ozpete, your link says the video has been removed.

I'm from geraldton... all the best stuff is in the Geraldton Museum. I don't think I am allowed to post links yet.... just do a search on youtube for batavia wreck dive... lots of interesting stuff there. I also did a snorkel on the Ben Ledi and Marten last week... great fun. Lots of interesting wrecks at the Abrolhos to look at and quite easy to find. I knew Max quite well... very interesting man and a great loss to the Midwest.... cheers pete

I miss Max a lot. He was a good friend of mine. He also helped John Clydesdale to identify a wheel from the first motorcar in Australia. It was being used as a buoy anchor in Geraldton Harbor for years. John passed away around 5 years ago. In fact, it was Max who rang me to tell me about it even though John only lived a few miles from me.

Both Max and Hugh Edwards are Order of Australia recipients based on their recovery and historical work on the Batavia. John was retired from The Australian (newspaper in Perth for those following this) and wrote Pioneer of the Road: The Story of Australia's First Self-Powered Road Vehicle.

Isn't this an interesting thread?

Sure you are allowed. Your link is broken because it says there's no video there. It just needs to be fixed is all.

Much better! You fixed it.

Pete, it made me very sad to see Max in the video. I'm in Perth and I'd only see Max when he came down here for a doctor's visit or other business. I wish I'd made more of an effort to visit him in Geraldton now.
