As a local of the Cape Fear, I am always ready to swap clues and stories concerning the area. Does anyone know of big finds in this area that is not associated with the numerous blockade runners that we have near shore?? Especially the Spanish Galleon that may have sank and scattered in Topsail Inlet. Any info would be great!!

Last year there was a story in the news that the El Salvador might have been found in that area.

Also I've read that there is suspected pirate treasure in the area, too.

Thanks for the great story on the El Salvador. I really will be surprised if they have found it, it could be a story for the investors. But, good luck to them.
The Galleon N. S. de Solidad could also still hold treasure although the British and the locals got what they could.
I have got a feeling that a lot more Spanish treasure ships lay off the NC coast. Especially, the very early flotas. A lot of those ships that " were never heard from again" and the fact that some Native Americans of this area have green eyes are very tempting suggestions that they could well be out there.
At this point, I am trying to gather info on a known Spanish wreck around Cape Fear. It occurred in June 1526. Has anyone ever heard of a Spanish settlement in NC called Chicora circa 1520s???

If you haven't already, you might try an advanced "full view" book search on google.com using keywords like cape fear, 1526, Ayllon, etc. There's quite a few books about the early history of the Carolinas that you can view page by page or download.

Thanks Sue!

I have seen a lot of stuff on the 1526 settlement. The experts disagree about the location, but I have a theory (although weak) that it might have been upriver maybe as far as Castle Hayne or even in the Brunswick River. It would be great to find it!!

Hi Don,
I think a lot of people get caught up in looking at an area as it is today and don't realize how much the land could have changed over the centuries - esp river and coastal areas. So a theory that might seem weak could be spot on actually.

Old maps can be helpful. My favorite map site is

as there's thousands of maps in high resolution. Has to be a cool guy to share his vast collection with the people of the world like that.

Good luck on your quest. I lived in coastal Carolina for several years, but that was before I was actively interested in Thunting. Sue

Very good point Sue.  I also  have to agree that old maps can be an invaluable asset.
