Tinkerer  . You and I both are too old to dive on the possible wreck where you found the cannon . I would like to do some research and try to find out which ship it could be  . If you want to keep the information for yourself I don't mind . If you want to give me the opportunity to do some more research I would appreciate it . Don't put anything on this net but inform mr through my personal e - mail  . alphaor@versatel.nl     Regards  Cornelius

Nowadays we hear a lot about pirates off the coast of Somalia. Makes us wonder what their life is like.
Makes us also wonder if the life of the pirates of old was much different.

What was a pirate's life like?

The following deposition by one such pirate dated 1682 tells us a lot about it.

What was the booty of the pirates? Well, just on this one page we can see amounts of gold, 70 pounds of gold, 20 pounds of gold, 150 pounds of gold and so on.
Besides the ship's hold full of merchandise.

Hmm, not quite as rich as a treasure galleon, but at todays gold price?

By the way, I suspect the containers shown on a post above, were containers meant to be filled with gold.

Would it be interesting to dig up such a shipwreck?

Tinkerer

Hello Tinkerer

As the Spaniards looted the New world, many of their vessels had more gold on the vessel than on their ships manifest. Spanish treasure ships were notorious because of smuggling and corruption of Spanish officials was rife. Some ships was even discovered to have nearly double the treasure that was officially on them.

Spain's plunder of the New World became the object of obsession for other countries to get their piece of that action too. If they could not get it from the New world themselves they took it from the Spanish themselves.

The golden gravy train lasted about 300 years and helped drive the development and growth of Europe and eventually opened up world trade in what we see today.

hardluck,

I agree, there was an immense amount of gold and silver shipped from the Americas to Europe.

Contrary to general belief, most of the gold was not shipped by the Spaniards, but by the Portuguese.

It goes about like that:

In the year 1490, there was about 50 tons of gold in the hands of European nations.
In the year 1700, this amount had increased to 200 tons, thanks to the plunder of the Americas.
In the year 1700, the gold shipments out of Brazil started to increase dramatically. Over the next 150 years, the staggering amount of 1800 tons of gold were shipped from Brazil to Europe, increasing the gold owned by the Western nations to 2000 tons.

About that time then came the gold rush in California, Klondike, South Africa and Australia. I lost count of all the gold that was shipped.

However, a lot of the gold shipped came to rest on the bottom of the oceans.

There it is waiting to be recovered by the courageous, intrepid entrepreneurs that are willing to face the seemingly unsurmountable problems.

The problems of salvaging were always seemingly unsurmountable. This is why only a small amount of the treasure was salvaged.
Today, with the advances of technology, a lot more treasure is within reach.

BUT IT NEEDS WILLPOWER.....

Tinkerer

Yes Sir it takes willpower and a ,,permit ,, .   Any salvage today can only be done by modern-day pirates .   Cornelius

Hello all

It is one of the truths of dangers in this game. Where there's treasure there's is evil and where there's evil, greed cannot be far behind.

I am going through the red tape and all the bureaucracy you could imagine for project I am working on that falls out of the Unesco agreement on historic shipwrecks. I have been hit with delaying tactics  to give government authorities time to re-legislate and implement the agreement in the region the project in. Before negotiations are finished.

I fully understand why recoveries are done in secret.
