Here is a map of the wrecksites of two ships of the VOC  . Both sank in front of the city of Vlissingen ( Flushing ) in the Povince of Zeeland  ( the Netherlands )   The ship Vliegend Hert was salvaged by Rex Cowan ( UK) but the Anna Catharina is still there exactly as the map tells you on a sandbank 2 miles off the city .  Cornelius

Hi Cornelius,
It sounds like that wreck is in your backyard! What's the matter, have you gotten too used to the warm waters over here in Florida?

Hunting Zeeland beaches can sometimes produce very old coins.

Found medieval and even roman coins here on the Belgian beaches.

I'm not so far from Vlissingen. So I might try again some day... Wink

Hello Cornelius,

do you  happen to have more information on the Catharina? Do you think it is worth salvaging?

Best wishes,

Christian

Yes Christian there is a lot more information available about the Anna Catharina . We know about the cargo , the place of wrecking . the date of wrecking . In order to salvage her you have to talk to the Dutch institutions . There was a lot of gold on board the Vliegend Hert and the same amount was on board the Anna Catharina . I think that a well establishd salvage company can talk to the people here and get a permit .  Regards  Cornelius

Hello Cornelius,

thank you for your message. Do you know what the approx. share / percentage is when coming to an agreement with teh dutch government? Are there any numbers how much gold had been aboard of the two ships?

Do you know the approx. depth of the wreck?

Best wishes and thank you for this interesting topic,

Christian

My dear salvage friends   :   On February the 3d 1745 both ships raised their anchor around 2 oclock in the afternoon . That day it was the low part of high-tide .The scipper and the pilots had calculated that around 8 oclock in the evening it should be high tide  . This would be enough water hight to take the last hirdle and make it possible to pass the sand banks in the channel to the ocean . Because of the East wind however the tide was lower than what was expected . Besides because of the same wind the ships arrived at the banks sooner than was expected . Coming at the  ,, drempel van Deurlo ,, it was found that there was not enough water under the shipa to pass over the banks . Because of large waves  the ships could not anchor to wait for the higher tide .  At 5 oclock the  Vliegend Hert got stuck at the  ,, drempel van Deurlo ,, while a bit later also the Anna Catharina ran aground . The A C was probably badly dammaged because she was swallowed up by the waves within half an hour . The V H got off the sand bank at 9 oclock that evening . She sailed to a deeper place where she sank at 11 oclock  . No man was saved from either ship . As I mentioned before the VH was salvaged by Rex Cowan  but the AC was never salvaged  . The reaso herefor was that Rex did not play fair with the Dutch government . The Dutch government decided that no more salvage should take place . On board these ships was a treasure of 70.000 Dutch Florins in the form of Gold dubloons  ( as the picture shows )  . Don't make a mistake  , you have to multiply this amount by 100 X in order to get the value of today .   Regards  Cornelius

Hi again Cornelius,
I guess my humor was ignored because this is a serious subject to you. I didn't mean it in a bad way, I'm sure you know. I was simply answering you on a thread that nobody had responded to at that point. At least it helps keep it active!
All the best,
Aquanut
