This was the modus of moving a ship from one anchoring place to another or to move a ship closer to the shore . You could not use the wind because that would move the ship too fast and there were no brakes on a ship as you well know . So this is how they did it for a small anchor or a larger one .  ( of course you had to winch in the ship everytime you brought out the anchor . This may have had  to be repeated a few times  )  .  Cornelius

Cornelious,
I wouldn't want to miss your informative posts! The last forum you were on has been boring since you left.

Another example of the ship moving anchor procedure. Of course, I've used this procedure many times myself.

"I've plotted a possible location where the ship run aground, and they used longboats to run an anchor out and winched the ship across the shallows to a deeper section  of water where another  anchor was dropped as  they started taking on water, and began jettisoning heavy  canon, and Gold, to try to  keep the ship afloat.

Lightening the load, they drifted onto another shallow patch, where the  anchor procedure was repeated, and they jettisoned more gold and heavy cargo to  further lighten the ship and lessen the amount of water pouring in. After freeing themselves  again.  they made an attempt to get to  land, and the safer shelter of the Suwanee river."  Dell

I was writing about how a ship was moved in a harbour . Now you mention dropping cannons and cargo overboard . Under calm weather conditions you just sailed the ship up on the coast . In a stormy condition you could never do what you suggest .   Cornelius

Aquanut . Thank you for your kind words . The reason I was banned from two forums was because the people in charge noticed that I became too popular  ( not that I think about myself that way ) .  I had so many friends , and I fealt at home .  But it hurt the guys with the big ego . So I had to go . I never use rude  or insulting language . I even asked some of my friends about that , and they agreed that I never was rude . So .....you figure it out .  Say hello to Pete . I wonder when I read his posts again .  Regards for now   Cornelius
