There seems to be a misconception about what it means to Lock a post. Locking a post means you do not want any replies to that post by anyone except a Moderator or an Administrator. If that happens to be what you want, then by all means LOCK your post by checking that block which says Lock This Topic.

What Locking a post does NOT do is keep it at the top. That's a function called making a post Sticky, which is not something a normal user here can do. If a Moderator or Administrator thinks your post is worthy, it can be made Sticky which puts it at the top of the posts in any given forum until the next Sticky post moves it down one notch. If you feel your post is important enough to make Sticky, contact a Moderator or an Administrator for help.

Bottom line? Unless there is some compelling reason to not receive any replies, do NOT Lock your posts. Someone just has to unlock it for you later.

There have been a lot of posts recently that have been locked incorrectly when the individuals are not aware of what it means. Almost everyone doing it thinks that locking the post keeps it at the top of the list in a topic. Instead, they get comments only from Moderators and Administrators who sometimes miss the locking of the post. My post and alert was to make sure everyone on THunting knows the use for locking. Newbies, for example, introduce themselves and only a very few welcome them. Or sometimes, they ask a question which is very important to them and they get no answers and wonder why. Hopefully, this thread will explain that to them and make the forums more pleasant to use.

Unfortunately I thinjk it may have not been evident to some members that they weren't meant in particular but that it has been a general anouncement to all of our members.

Buckshot, it was a blanket message sent to everyone because it can happen to anyone.

If you have locked your posts (accidentally or not) you'll know who you are.    If you haven't, then just learn from the mistakes of others just like you read the other posts to learn from the mistakes and successes of others.

(if the shoe fits, wear it---if it doesn't fit it don't worry, it was not directed at you)
