Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone. I am brand new here Smiley
I was just wondering before I start taking apart my newly purchased whites 6/DB . I just purchased this from my cousin. I was wondering the best way to clean the switches and rotory dials. The ground balance switch will move but only with alot of effort , the volume rotory is stiff as well.My cousin may have used this machine only a couple of times.I put in a fresh 9 volt battery and the meter reads the battery charge ok . I can't any sound or any other meter response from the machine and thought if I cleaned up those controls with electronic spray that it might come back to life again. Can any of the switches come apart and if so can I use like a Dielectric grease to lube any of them ?. Do any of you have or know about this older machine at all. Were they any good at all. Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks so much

Contact cleaner should free them up. Use the plastic tube on the spray and fire a shot where the wire terminals hit the potentiometer. The shafts may be corroded. Take off the knobs and shoot some electronic cleaner on the shaft as you turn it back and forth. Welcome from CT

Hi Mudflap .Please forgive my late reply, life happens and priorities go to top . Well just finished cleaning the White's control switches with the electronic cleaner they all loosened up , like magic. There was one switch ,the ground balance control became hard to turn again after the cleaner evaporated. I guess it maybe gummed up with old grease. All the others are fine . I will give it another cleaning and see if that improves it anymore.
Thankyou for the help. One step closer to getting this oldtimer ticking. Now to work on a couple of  battery packs for it . I believe a 9 volt and a 12 volt .The rechargeable battery pack that came with it is finished .Have you ever made up any battery packs from scratch by using 1.5 volt Ni cad cells ?  Thanks again

Hi Lord Dracon . The electronic cleaner worked very well . The ground control dial is still some what stiff . I will give it another cleaning and see if I can free it up a little better.I have been very busy with things on the farm ,so it is not running yet . I will work on making up a couple of battery packs or purchasing them . I would like to try making up the battery packs from 1.2 volt rechargeable cells .Ebay sell the rechargeable cells with the solder tabs for making up packs.
Thankyou

maybe some  silicon grease spray might help. it will also help keep water/moisture out of the pots.  ... don't quote me on this, its just an idea. sdon't try it just yet... I think we needs the opinion of a pro first. just in case it screws it up! (after its cleaned)

I wouldn't put silicone grease on potentiometers themselves. At least don't get it inside the pot.

I've built ni-cad packs for years. Most cells have stainless tabs that are spot welded to the battery. They are very difficult to solder. I used to use borax flux and silver solder with a torch and/ or a 375 watt or so soldering gun. You have to get in and out as the heat can not stay on the battery too long. You also have to be careful of your eyes should you short out a pack while working on it. Best thing is to look around, eBay etc and you will find people that can provide and assemble the cells for you. They can put a pigtail lead on the battery with a connector to snap on your detector. You really need a low impedance connection and the spot weld is the better way to go. Also Radio Shack and other places sell packs for RC cars etc. cheep (like $8.00).  I have bought them, removed the outer plastic tape and simply put the pack into the Whites battery shell. Another option is to make a pack that just holds regular alkaline cells. You can buy off the shelf AA ni-cads and snap them in the holder.       I'm sure you will get all kinds of tips here.
