Yes, there are plenty of treasures in South America and there are lots of treasure hunters but few detectors because of strict laws and corruption within the government agencies. In 2003 during my months in Brazil, I found a number of modern coins in the Sao Paulo parks including a few dating back in the 1800s. I was able to get away with it by working at night and the fact that I had a special embassy passport.

Nice to have somebody with first hand local experience. Do you have any information about the legislation about metal detecting there? Any link to rules and legislation or pertinent information?

All the best

No, never looked into that segment. I was burdened with problems at the Embassy, Geocaching and buying thousands of carats of beautiful gemstones.

South America is full of treasure legends. Anyone hear of these tunnels that were built a long time ago, supposed to be somewhere in the jungle. Full of old treasures!!

Goldnboy:
Those tunnels supposedly run under the Andes mountains. Eric Von Danigan wrote about them... I haven't read his books for many, many years...

Hello Richard, I'm not sure they are the same tunnels!? was Eric Von Danigan's book just about the tunnels or was there some other treasure tales in there also. It was a long time ago that I read this book. It was very nice reading but I cant remember the name...
I'm also interested in gem stones, what were you buying ? I only have a small collection  at the moment.
  Cool

The tunnels (supposedly) held a wealth in gold artifacts.
The gems were many types found in Brazil, many I'd never heard of before. The big mining area is Minas Gerais where raw stones can be purchased by the burlap bag full. Cut stones can be bought at the flea markets all over Sao Paulo. Be careful though, shop around before purchasing...
