I'm currently stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso and was wondering if any of y'all knew of any great places to hunt in or near El Paso, or if you're currently in the area looking for a partner in crime Smiley lol

Hey, Treasurehound.   Welcome from Arizona.   You've got a whole lot of places available in southern New Mexico.   Lot's of legendary teasures / tales of robberies all along that area....not to mention a lot of smuggling and rustling over the years.

BA in Arizona

Ft Bliss itself has a long history. You might want to check with the Provost Marshall and see if you can hunt some of the base areas.

When my son was stationed there in the '80s, he and I went deer hunting north of the base in some scrub lands. We both bagged one each but I lost my beloved Ka-Bar knife - mine since the early '70s. I was crushed about that. If you find it, let me know, will you?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

The book is The Coin of Contraband   It is the biography of Alvin Freidheim Scharff, one of the early Border Patrol agents who had been a rustler and smuggler prior to working for the government.   Among other things he was responsible for starting air patrols of the southern border.   Even though I have had the book for a few months, I've only just started the book.   The first few chapters have been riveting.  With plenty of leads.

Thank you all very much for the information! I have found a few leads of my own here, it just seems impossible to get anybody to let you on the land around here lol. I know a border patrol agent that goes along the rio grande after it floods and recedes and he finds a lot of cannon balls and other military relics stuck in the sides of the banks once the water goes down, unfortunately that land to a civilian is "no mans land" here because it's so close to the border. Thanks again everyone
