Go Up Go Down

Well, went down to Galveston last week with the family for a vacation, stayed over in Pirates Beach, where we have stayed in the past.
havent been since the hurricane tore it up, and happened to notice one of the homes we stayed in previously was no longer there!

we usually just hang out on the beach, and let the kids play, but this time my brother in law wanted to do some crabbin.  so he pulls up a google earth shot, that points to a good possible location just north of us, by the country club, on the bay side.

we pull up, and I cant help but notice the very interesting looking abandoned homestead that sat right next to the spot we found.  I was dying to get inside and check it out.  there was a local there from Jamaica Beach fishing the same spot, so I asked him about it...He tells me that it has a rich history
stories of pirates, Indians, all kinds of haunted legends
since i am a homebuilder, and love to check out old homesites anyway(not to mention a treasure hunter!!) i was really stoked!

of course when someone mentions pirates around Galveston, I couldnt help but think Jean Lafitte
now i am really itching to get in this thing.  I didnt think to grab my phone to take with me, or camera, so we didnt go in.
the next day we went back, and i brought the phone, to take pictures, and a flashlight, because i was going in!

we walk in and find the murals of pirates on the walls, one of which is the likeness of none other than Lafitte himself!
of course it had been vandalized, as any abandoned home we come across as hunters

it was a really cool place, and i took several pictures(attached a couple)  i could only imagine the possibilities of what happened on this property, and the rich history behind it

after we left, i did a google search via the phone for the place, and found that this was possibly the battle site of Lafitte and the Karankawa Indians
and of course several legends about the place

I was excited to see some really cool history on the place i just stumbled upon and got to visit.
was itching to search the place real good, but figured it was a 'permission needed' site, which i probably should have gotten before going in anyway...oops

was curious to see if any one here has been to it, or know any kind of a true history behind it?

let me know if you would like to see some more pictures

thanks!

Nice pictures. Do you know what kind of hat the guy in the picture has on?

Oh man, but that's a good one.  Hope you track down the owners and get permission.

Go Up Go Down

looks like a dark brown or black one to me...

will probably be next year before i get back down there, i believe the owner is a real estate company, probably would be hard to get an ok from them
setting all the history aside, just based on the size and value of the home and all, i wouldnt be surprised if there were some stashes around the place.

one of the legends on it was that the last owner killed off the family there, doubtful about that one, but you never know...
anyways, very intrigued by it all!
thanks

The place is owned by the state now and is part of the start park. It was the home of Salvatore Maceo, also known as Sam Maceo, was a businessman, community leader, and organized crime boss in Galveston. Lots of history there but they are very hard on trespassers. I have a large file on Sam, his organization and yes his house. Its only a mile from my house wish I had known you were here. I am writing a story about Lafittes Grove now after I post it later this week will post some interesting stuff on Sam.

very cool, i knew one of yall lived down there, couldnt recall who though
wish i would have made a better effort, and had the chance to meet with you, will have to do that for sure next time im down that way
i even told my wife one of yall lived down there, and i was hoping to get a chance to meet up, just wasnt able to do so this time, bummer!!

i sure am glad we didnt have any kind of confrontations with the law down there! the property seemed to be well maintained, other than the area directly around the house...had no idea it was state owned, what i pulled up showed it was owned by a real estate company, and of course that was after going in

will look forward to seeing your upcoming posts on Lafitte and Sam, it will be interesting to hear more about both

thanks

I had a guided tour there a few years ago, on a bird watching trip in the spring.  Too bad they don't seem interested in restoring the place, It's a really nice hacienda.  I live about 2 miles from there, straight west across the state park  ("straight west" here on the island is really SW)

Wow! Nice to meet you!
What a shame its going away.
As a homebuilder, I do understand progress though.
When is the demo planned for?

I will probably be back down that way this summer.
Would love to know more of the history there.

Thank you!
