| building a sifter or classifier is a simple as making a square or rectangle oiy of 4 pieces of 1 X 3 and adding screen or wire mesh to the size of material you want to pass through.

How about a pre-made sifter, for heavy duty use?
I made one for panning, by taking a nice yellow pop crate and putting 1/4 inch hardware cloth, in the bottom, I brought the hardware cloth about 4 inches up the sides, then I took light aluminum siding. and *shingled* it over the screen, so the screen was covered, on the sides, by aluminum sheet, and only the hand holds were left open. The whole ting was pop riveted together, using large, nickel size washers (with small holes.)
I could fill this about 1/4 full, and chouse and shake it in a tub of water... all the heavies go through, well.... when the tub got too full, I quit screening and panned. The rest of the time it carried stuff like a trowel, a small pan and so on.
I built a wood one (large staples) but never used it for gravel.... it makes a great blue-berry sifter, the immature ones go through, as well as most leaves. It is too nice to get wet and dirty!
