Hi folks, less than two hours ago this coin was still in the ground!
A quick clean in the palm of my hand with warm water & detergent, followed by a finger & thumb polish using Brasso. Then a cold water rinse to clean off the cleaning agents, left me with this beautiful coin.
A second issue 1817 'Small head' Halfcrown of George III. This helped to make up for what was until then a very poor day...only two copper coins & a beaten up silver ring was all I had to show for 4 hours in the field. The Halfcrown made the day a success. Amazing what one find can do for you!
I love big silver, and at 32mm I class this as big silver  Kiss
Just out of interest, current market value would be around $50, but I never sell my finds!
Hodge

Can you describe a little about depth of find, soil type and historical value of the area you were hunting?

Hi, it was around 8inches down in recently sown sandy-soil. Its the first time I've detected in this area & it was nice to have new scenery to detect in. Also, the digging was easy due to the soil type. The location is just outside the town of Ruthin in Denbighshire, North Wales. Its ancient history suggests that there was considerable Roman activity in the hills surrounding the field we were in today. To date we've not come up with any coins or artefacts from that period, but maybe next time!

I know when I find a Paleo or Mississippian artifact here in Tn. I'm transported back in time in that moment. Thanks for the info about your fantastic find!

Hodge, thanks for sharing another nice portrait of a dead monarch with us.  Got to love old silver (especially when you don't have old gold coming up to).
