I went out detecting near an old school & found a 1944 wheat penny, 1948 wheat penny & various other clad coins. The 1948 wheat penny is silver in color. From the research I've done the coin in question was dipped in silver or mercury. The only steel pennies that I'm aware of were minted in 1943.
Sorry! I meant the subject to say 1948 wheat penny.
