Hi there, I found this button at the site of a former woolen mill that was in operation during the Civil War until the late 1960's.  Can you help me identify what kind of uniform it came from before sold to the ragman who sold it to the mill?  Thank you so much.  Susan

I dragged your pic over to Google and it found and compared it to a picture of a red fox!!!! Huh?   So much for picture recognition technology... Huh?
One of the local Thunting experts will find it...

Homefire is correct.   That would be an enlisted man's collar disk for Battery C of the 334th Artillery regiment circa World War I.

BA

The 334th Artillery Regiment was part of the 87th (Acorn) Division of the National Army (as opposed to the National Guard).  The 87th Division was drawn from Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.  Their stateside "cantonment" site was Camp Pike in the Little Rock, Arkansas area.  The division was sent overseas in September 1918.

You can find out a bit more about the 87th here

In addition, if you look here, you'll see how much someone is asking for a disk similar to yours but from Battery A :

Don't I wish  Smiley

It definitely helps that i have been a student of military history since I was in elementary school (military history was the first history I could really get interested in).

For those who are curious ---  Homefire and I recognized crossed cannons as the branch insignia for artillery just like crossed swords is the insignia for cavalry and crossed rifles is the insignia for infantry.   When there are two sets of numbers or a set of numbers and a letter, the "major" unit is on top and the child unit is on the bottom.
The next step was to pin down the date range.  Fortunately the insignia tend to change fairly frequently, so I looked for a website that illustrated the changes and found this one:

.   That told me it was World War I vintage and confirmed that it was enlisted (officer insignia generally are not on disks).  Then it was just a matter of using my favorite search engine to look for US Army 334th Artillery Regiment World War I.

Hope that helps someone in the future.

BA
