It's still a nice find and the coins will buy a battery or two.

When I first read your subject line, I thought of Gilligan's Island and their "3 hour tour."

Lucky you! You could have been shipwrecked on an island where nobody ever dropped a single coin. How dismal!

On the flip side, those women were gorgeous.

redrain, I know an antique toy collector that would like to have that cannon. I'll bet it is WW1 or before. Maybe from 1880s. I dug up a tin soldier WW1 and had to give it to him because he drooled on it. Great gambol Grin

Hi redrain22

I don't think you broke it. It looks like it was already cracked from the oxidation mind you the photo is quite small so I could be wrong.
Nice find though.

All the best

Go Up Go Down

Redrain, the cannon is too good a find to not repair. Most collectors would prefer a damaged item over one that had been repaired as long as the damage does not materially detract from the object. That's my experience. In this case. the cannon is so collectable that a repair is in order. I haven't had any luck soldering low melting alloy castings. Especially old ones. It is hard to get the surface clean enough to take the solder and too much heat will melt the metal. My suggestion is a splint and bond-o. That is body repair compond. Get the light gray type as it can be colored any color darker. . Bond-o has enough strength to stay in the crack but you will need to put a wooden dowel inside the barrel to give it actual strength. I would drill both pieces slightly oversize and mount the dowel with bond-o. Drilling oversize lets you align the two peices perfectly. Clean all surfaces toothbrush clean before applying the bondo.  when the bondo is partially set, scrape it smooth and after 24 hrs sand or file to the appropriate finish. I don't know how to color the seam. If you know an artist he can probably mix up matching colors. Nice thing about bondo. Its paintable. I would think painting a perfect ring of gray around the joint would be preferable to having it in two pieces. I hope this advice helps. gambol
